MEDIA DRIVEN - Myth'sTanning salon use of sunbeds causes skin cancer. Wrong !!There is NO CONCLUSIVE SCIENTIFIC research to suggest that the use of sunbeds is accompanied with a higher risk of skin cancer. Research has shown that in countries with the most annual sunshine, there are the fewest cases of Colon, Prostate and Breast Cancer – thus refuting the link between UV light and cancer CONVEYED by the MEDIA. AND THE FACTS….Some people are more at risk than others. Heredity plays a major role. If your mother, father, siblings, or children (first-degree relatives) have had a melanoma, you are part of a melanoma-prone family. Each person with a first-degree relative diagnosed with melanoma has a 50 percent greater chance of developing the disease than members of the general public who do not have a family history of the disease. If the cancer occurred in a grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew (second-degree relatives), there is still an increase in risk compared to the general population, though it is not as great. There is no difference between natural sunlight and sunbeds; tanning salon sunbeds produce the same UV light as the sun. Research has shown that in countries with the most annual sunshine, there are the fewest cases of Colon, Prostate and Breast Cancer – thus refuting the link between UV light and Cancer conveyed by the media. BENEFITS OF TANNING SALON SUNBEDS
VITAMIN DSunbeds & sunlight are the main sources of your bodies ability to produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for good health. It lowers the risk of everyday infections like cold and flu as well as more fatal diseases, high blood pressure, Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and depression. Sunlight is the most effective way for the body to manufacture Vitamin D - indoor or outdoor. 6 out of 10 adults in the UK are Vitamin D deficient. - Studies suggest that regular, moderate use of sunbeds will raise the levels of Vitamin D in healthy adults by an average of 40% Tanning in a sensible manner creates a whole host of health benefits. It is OVEREXPOSURE that causes the health risks. In moderation sunbed use is good for you.
Responsible Tanning AdviceWhat should you do?Remove all jewellery and make-up prior to tanning as these act as a barrier & will decrease the tanning process. BEFORE ENTERING THE SUNBED you should apply either Absolute Gold or Absolute Style pre-tan enhancing creams. They contain the finest quality ingredients available to promote the deepest, darkest tan and are fortified with essential nutrients, vitamins and moisturisers. Ask our staff for advice on the best product for you. IT IS IMPORTANT A CREAM IS APPLIED PRIOR TO TANNING AS MOISTURISED SOFT SKIN TANS FAR FASTER THAN DRY SKIN, dry un-moisturised skin actually reflects the rays, so you will NOT receive your full quota of tan. Example: Without a lotion applied, you pay for 10 minutes, but only receive the equivalent of 6 minutes, you could be LOOSING up to 40% of what you paid for. NO BRAINER !! How often do I need to use the sunbed salon in order to maintain a tan? This varies, depending on your skin type but, generally, in order to maintain your tan you will need to use the sunbed two or three times a week. Protecting your Eyes?Ultraviolet light damages the naked eye, so we strongly recommend that you use protective eye wear and do not to look at the tubes with the naked eye. Is the tan produced by a sunbed any different from the tan produced by natural sunlight? There is absolutely NO difference between the colour of tan achieved from a sunbed compared to natural sunlight, the pigmentation process occurs in exactly the same way. Both UVA (the TANNING ray) and UVB (the reddening ray) are essential to achieve a tan. The ADVANTAGE of using a sunbed to tan, is the sunbed tanning tubes emit only a very tiny amount of UVB (less than 1%) and over 99% UVA ( the TANNING ray), so you tan WITHOUT the burning (following sunbed instructions is essential). DO NOT exceed 4 minutes if you have fair skin or just starting a tan, the reception staff at all Ab fab salons are fully trained and will advise you on session length. This is why using our FULLY STAFFED and LICENSED salons is so important, rather than using UNMANNED and UNLICENSED sites. Most people are able to use a sunbed but there are exceptions. If you answer YES to any of the questions below, you must seek medical advice or don't use a sunbed:
Also, if you are on any medication or drugs, please check with your GP or pharmacist before using a sunbed as certain drugs make the skin more sensitive to UV light.
